General Practitioner (GP) in the Netherlands
General practice medical care is generalist care. A GP is open to all questions about illnesses, complaints and other medical problems for people of any age. The General Practitioner has the knowledge and skills to adequately respond to questions and assess complaints and problems concerning any medical problem. The GP can give a patient immediate advice or care or refer the patient to another physician.
A GP provides patient-oriented care and pays close attention to the patient’s individual characteristics, the patient’s personal life and his work and living environment. The General Practitioner takes all these aspects into account to establish a proper diagnose. In other words, the GP integrates context knowledge with physical, mental and social aspects that can influence the patient’s well-being.
A GP provides continuous care, being a constant factor in the patient’s health care and ensuring the continuity of care during a period of illness and treatment. The GP has a directional role for cohesion in health care and functions as a spider in the web working closely together with other health care providers.
